IT week this week has an interesting acticle on DP. This can be found at:-

Also there was quite a strongly worded editorial entitled Tame Watchdog
(reproduced below).

"The Information Commission's wishy-washy approach to enforcing the Data
Protection Act may worry businesses and individuals who elieve that data
security and public confidence in e-commerce are good for the economy.

Last week, assistant commissioner David Smith spoke at the E-Business Expo
in London. During his presenatation on data protection for e-business,
Smith said the new law had two purposes: to protect the rights of
individuals and to promote business, particularly e-comerce. He recommended
best practices for businesses storing data, and explained the individual's
right to control personal information. He added that if firms did not
observe the new law, the commission would follow up complaints, and that if
necessary it would serve enforcement notices on companies infringing its
rules.

So if a company continues to flout rules, will the commission come down hard
on it? It seems not. Although Smith admitted that the commission could
initiate prosecutions, he stressed that certain restraints meant that it was
highly unlikely. The new law may all be about helping business, but it will
be undermined unless the commission is willing to take action. Warnings
need to be backed up by a serious traet of penalties, otherwise they are
just hot air."

Well someone had to say it I suppose.
