This has been an issue within the West Midlands area for some time, The West
Midlands Local Authorities Data Protection Forum are currently looking into
this issue. I'm currently looking at the 29(3) disclosure form used by our
local force, with an aim to making more friendly to the data controller.
Any comments on forms received by colleagues in this field would be greatly
appreciated.

A couple of questions about how others handle release of information to
Police
officers:
I'm sure most of us have a policy of not releasing information to the Police
without the appropriate paperwork, but what if the Police are responding to
your request to investigate a crime, for example you report a crime and an
officer arrives and requests information about a staff member in order to
investigate it, do you still ask for written confirmation that the officer
is
assigned to that case? This could also apply if a CCTV operator witnesses a
crime on screen and reports it to the Police who then ask for the tape.
A second question on the same subject: what would you do if a Police officer
presented the necessary exemption certificate but then asked for data that
you
can not readily see has a bearing on the case, even though it relates to
someone you know is under investigation?
Any opinions on these questions would be greatly appreciated.
