Alison -

I spoke to Peter Bloomfield of the OIC Compliance unit about this very subject
last week. We were concerned about the fact that we were processing NOK details
without informing the subjects (i.e. parents, guardians etc) that this was the
case.

Peter was fairly sanguine about this. He simply recommended that we ask the
student providing the information to tell their nominated NOK (actually we call
them "emergency contact" nowadays, because overseas students didn't really
understand the term "next of kin") that we had collected their data for a
single specific purpose. There was no need for us to contact the NOK directly.

Thus, in future, we shall:

(i) explain to each student what we do with their emergency contact details (in
fact, we already do this), and:
(ii) ask the student to let the nominee know that they have been so nominated.

This advice will also appear, in due course, in the "First Registration"
guidelines available at www.dpa.lancs.ac.uk.
