This is a situation when I would do two things:

1) Ask the IC's office for advice
2) Hide behind my legal department

It strikes me that we have two potentially conflicting laws here, and I run
for cover under all such circumstances

Subject: electoral roll

Our local council is demanding that we disclose names and addresses of
students resident in University accommodation for electoral roll purposes,
and they're using the Representation of the People Act to beat us with.

I am reluctant to cough up this data, partly because liability attaching to
failure to notify local authorities of information for the electoral roll
must lie with the individual, and partly because I have serious misgivings
about rumoured processing of electoral roll data beyond the stated purpose -
ie apparent disclosure to third parties.

Any views/knowledge/experience which people might like to share in this
area??
