Not having read too well the original message, I thought it said, it was a long term study (longitudinal) thus the ability to follow on the subjects is essential, thus names etc are essential. The norm would be to create an anonymous sample of subjects (larger than what they would want to study) together with the school, then the school approaches the parents and asks for permission to disclose names and so on. If parents refuse that is it.
