Making Sense of Management: Why Does Management Need Philosophy?

Friday 2 November 6 pm

Senate House (Room 331)
University of London
Malet Street
London WC1E 7HU

Nigel Laurie and Chris Cherry will introduce for discussion a range of
philosophical issues about the theory and practice of management, and about
the complex relationships between manager and managed. (Many of us find
ourselves occupying both roles.) Topics will include:

o Why has philosophy been so reluctant to address management thinking and
ideals?

o Why is it important that it do so now?

o Why does management seem to lack a history?

o How can doing philosophy help managers make better sense of tasks such as
encouraging creativity and thinking coherently and realistically about
motivation?

Nigel Laurie is Editor and Chris Cherry Chair of the Editorial Board of
Reason in Practice: The Journal of Philosophy of Management.
