CASE PhD studentship in clinical decision support Department of Mathematical Sciences University of Durham Applications are invited for an EPSRC-funded CASE PhD studentship in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Durham. The studentship is in collaboration with E-Tech limited, Sheffield, (www.e-orthopaedics.com) and supported by the Smith Institute (http://www.smithinst.ac.uk/). The research concerns the development of statistical tools and methods to support clinical decision-making, especially in the area of prosthetic surgery. The methods include the distillation of multivariate data on decisions and outcomes into clinically useful formats, the identification and use of patterns within the data, for example to help clinicians better understand the interplay of the various factors, and the development of Bayesian methods to examine the relationships between patient outcomes and previous diagnostic judgements, in order to understand and improve the clinician's decision processes. The focus of the research is applied and practical. The studentship is open to UK citizens and other UK/EU residents covered by EPSRC eligibility guidelines (http://www.epsrc.ac.uk). Candidates must have, or expect to obtain shortly, at least a II(i) honours degree in Statistics or Mathematics, or an equivalent qualification, and must have some training in multivariate statistics. The studentship will be for three years and will include full fees, EPSRC maintenance grant (presently £7,500 per annum, under review) and a further top-up grant (presently £3,000 per annum). The student will be provided with a laptop computer by the company. Further, with the agreement of the student, the company may be able to offer further fees for small episodes of paid work, related to the studentship. Any such extra work will be subject to the standard terms and conditions of an EPSRC CASE studentship. The preferred start date is March 1st 2002. For an exceptional candidate, the start date may be deferred to October 1st 2002. Enquiries may be made to the Postgraduate Admissions Tutor, Dr. Frank Coolen (email: [log in to unmask], tel: 01913743022), or directly to the PhD supervisor, David Wooff (email: [log in to unmask], tel: 01913744531). Candidates should apply for admission using the University's standard application form, available from http://www.dur.ac.uk/postgrad/pg_form.htm or on request from the Admissions Tutor.
