>so what was the difference between a slam & a group reading? > >Doug A group reading is a cooperative, communal event. Ideally, each poet is given equal regard. The SLAM I attended was made up of 5 identifiable groups (a group from L.A., a group from Portland, OR, etc.). The group members were each local champs having survived judging on their home turf. The Big Sur SLAM was a regional event to find which group would then go on to a wider regional than national SLAM. Three members of the audience were selected at random as judges. No other qualification was required beyond being present. Each poet was judged on a scale of 1 to 10, each team fielded 3 poets (alternating group for each reader until 3 from each group had read). The team with the most points in the end won. Meanwhile the rest of us drank beer and talked about how high priced the food was. Does that help, Doug? :fp *************** Frank Parker [log in to unmask] http://now.at/frankshome
