DEPARTMENT OF GEOMATICS

Research and Teaching Support Officer
Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and GIS

The Department of Geomatics has a vacancy for a Research and
Teaching Support Officer in the general area of photogrammetry,
the metric aspects of remote sensing and the data management
aspects of GIS. The post is tenable on a two year rolling
contract basis from October 2001.

The role can involve all aspects of the department's work that
will support its staff in their research and teaching. The
successful candidate will be responsible for undertaking aspects
of research contracts, assisting research students and
demonstrating (and possibly teaching depending on experience) on
the undergraduate degree programmes. The possibility exists for
suitably qualified candidates to study part-time for a higher
degree by research.

Applicants should have, either through research or commercial
activity, some experience and skills in one or more of analytical
and digital photogrammetry, the geo-referencing and analysis of
remotely sensed imagery or the implementation and customisation
of GIS.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on either the GR1B scale:
£17,451-£19,486 or the GR1A scale: £17,451-£26,229 according to
qualifications and experience.

The department has nine academic staff, three research staff and
six support staff. It has research specialisms across the
spectrum of photogrammetry, remote sensing and GIS as well as in
space and engineering geodesy. In the 1996 Research Assessment
Exercise the department was awarded grade 4. There are currently
22 postgraduates studying for higher degrees by research. The
department offers two undergraduate degree programmes, one in
Surveying and Mapping Science and the other in Geographic
Information Science together producing about 40 graduates per
year. In a recent HEFCE teaching assessment the department was
rated as excellent.

Informal enquires about the post should be made to Professor
David Parker, Department of Geomatics, University of Newcastle
upon Tyne, NE1 7RU; tel 0191-222-6447; email
