Those of you in London (or in striking difference) might wish to give some time to this: Pete North ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Stop Plan Colombia ! Picket of the US Embassy, Grosvenor Square, (nearest5 tube Bond St) Thursday 14 December, 6pm The £1.3 bn "counter-narcotics" aid package from the US to the Colombian army dwarfs US aid to the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean put together. This is to secure stability for the American multinationals in a region, which has exploded into struggle in the past year against the policies of their frontmen in the World Bank and the IMF. The aid will pour directly into the brutal war waged by the Colombian army against the FARC guerillas who enjoy popular support from the poor peasants. One of the army's preferred methods is to use an Agent Orange-type chemical to defoliate vast swathes of the peasants' land to flush out the guerillas. In the cities, the army and business assassinate more trade unionists than anywhere else in the world.
