My 1947 Encyclopaedia Brittanica informs me that arc lamps for public lighting were first installed in the USA in 1879, and that in 1882 a railway station in New York was lit by Edison's incandescent electric lamps (the birst electric light bulbs as we know them).My guess is that at the time of the Boer War a "tall" electric light would have been an arc light.
