John, If you are AT ALL interested in the Voyage of Saint Brendan - and I assume you must be - may I recommend SEVERIN, Tim: "The Brendan Voyage". Drawings by Trondur Patursson. London: Hutchinson, 1978. ISBN 0-09-133100-5 For "hands on" archaeology of the most heroic kind, this book (an account of building & then sailing a replica of the leather coracle probably used by St B. across the north Atlantic) is hard to beat, and the insights into the mediaeval text are profoundly illuminating. Not least significant, is the fact that they were ripped by an iceberg below the water line, a la Titanic, but unlike the Titanic they were able to STITCH the rip and finish the voyage. What price technology ?
