Dear learned ones, I feel very remiss at missing the anniversary of St. Edmund, king and martyr, last monday, the more so as i have a question about the date of his death as recorded in medieval sources. modern historical works give the date of his death as 869, while a number of medieval ones (incl. the anglo-saxon chronicle) have 870. i would very much like to know what year (if any) is found in other saints lives, chronicles, etc. - or, if anyone can suggest it, a reason for the discrepancy. thanks, Margaret Cormack [log in to unmask] Dept. of Philosophy and Religion fax: 843-953-6388 College of Charleston tel: 843-953-8033 Charleston, SC 29424-0001
