Press Release

German Christmas Market London 2000

The first German Christmas Market or "Weihnachtsmarkt" will be
held this year at Covent Garden

London, November 25th to December 22nd 2000

The Market:
For this event, in its first year, there will be a traditional, romantic
German-style Christmas market with a maximum of 35 stands.
Every stand will be a solid log-cabin style wooden hut, which will be
beautifully embellished with Christmas decorations by the individual
traders. Mulled wine, gingerbread, food specialities, craft products,
Christmas tree and household decorations and articles suitable as
presents will be on offer, not to mention delicious food and drink
from Germany. Scattered Christmas trees, hanging decorations and
Christmas music will add to the atmosphere. This German
Christmas market will be the first traditional "Weihnachtsmarkt" in
the long history of this important world city.

The Market Place:
Covent Garden Market is a venerable building in the heart of London
and was built in 1832 to the plans of Mr. Charles Fowler as a large
market hall. Gradually in was discovered that there was not enough
room for the fruit and vegetable market and this was moved to a less
central location. In 1980 the market hall was re-developed as a
shopping centre. They were careful to keep the units small so as
not to attract large corporate retailers. At the same time the world
famous „Apple Market" was set up under the glass-roof between the
two main halls. Surrounded by the St. Pauls cathedral (built in
1630), the new Opera House, various theatres, the London
Transport Museum, many shops, restaurants, bistros and pubs is
the East Piazza on which our "German Weihnachtsmarkt" will be
built.

EXPERIENCE LONDON'S FIRST GERMAN CHRISTMAS MARKET
AT COVENT GARDEN MARKET

From 25 November to 22 December, the East Piazza of Covent
Garden Market will be transformed into a romantic German
Christmas Market or 'Weihnachtsmarkt'. Embellished log cabins will
house a range of stalls offering a whole range of items including
mulled wine, arts and crafts, gifts, Christmas decorations and
speciality foods. An on-going entertainment programme, Christmas
trees, fantastic decorations and traditional music, carol singers, and
a daily visit from Santa Claus will add to the atmosphere, ensuring
that Covent Garden Market will not only be the perfect place for
Christmas shopping, but also for a family outing. The entertainment
programme will include Gospel singers, German choir, open - air
Chritmas service , Santa Claus, German-style Punch and Judy
show, opera singers, a vote for the best decorated stall and many
other traditional events.

German Christmas Markets have proved to be a huge success in
New York, Chicago, Colombo, Toronto but this is the first one to be
held in London. The opening of the market on 25 November will
coincide with the turning on of the lights of Covent Garden Market's
impressive Christmas decorations and tree by a famous face, to be
revealed at a later date.

Sue McAinsh, Centre Manager of Covent Garden Market
comments, "Covent Garden Market is always a very special place
at Christmas and the German Christmas Market will really add to
the atmosphere. People love doing their Christmas shopping here
because there are so many fashion boutiques and unusual shops,
as well as our own unique crafts stalls selling high quality gift items
and toys. Now there will be even more choice as the German
Christmas Market will sell a wide variety of special gifts including
glove puppets, musical instruments, jewellery, textiles, pictures and
carvings."
