You are cordially invited to the following event which is part of a
lecture series organised by the Goethe-Institut London in collaboration
with the Institute of Germanic Studies:

BRITISH WRITERS ON GERMAN LITERATURE

Thursday 23 November, 5.30 for 6pm at the Institute of Germanic Studies:

MICHAEL HULSE ON 'PAUL FLEMING'S TRAVAILS AND GRACES'

Born in 1955, the English writer Michael Hulse currently divides his
time between Amsterdam and Cologne. In addition to his poetry, he has
published award-winning translations of works by, amongst others,
Elfriede Jelinek and W.G. Sebald. He also works as a critic and co-edits
the literary magazine Stand.

In his lecture, Michael Hulse will look at the poetry of Paul Fleming
(1609-1640), a highly educated Saxon physician who trained at Leipzig
and spent his crucial years, from 1633 to 1639, as a member of a trade
mission to Russia and Persia. His poems combine elegance of form with a
winning sincerity of tone and immediacy of experience which set a model
for his age and were widely admired.

Free admission.
