Recognise any of these? * Increased workload? * Fewer members of staff? * Changes in technology/organisational structure? * Threat of redundancy? Then you might just benefit from attending: Managing stress A Library Association workshop on 27 September, in London Stress can stimulate and motivate us, but excessive stress, especially when over a long time, is bad for everyone - the people who are stressed, their colleagues, and the library service as a whole. Managing stress and keeping it to levels which do not harm is therefore as important for libraries and other organisations as it is for the individuals and teams who work in them. Excessive stress is expensive. It results in reduced motivation and impaired efficiency, so less is achieved. Stressed staff often seek work elsewhere, and the cost of recruitment and training take resources away from services. The courts have made large awards of damages against both private organisations and public authorities where a particular source of workplace stress has been shown to have seriously impaired the physical or mental well-being of an employee. There are many reasons for stress at work. Some are outside our control, but others we can do something about as individuals, as teams, and as managers. Managing Workplace Stress is an opportunity to identify the causes of stress in library and information work, and to look at things that can be done to keep it to a level which is stimulating and productive rather than damaging to individuals or services. How will this event help you? By the end of the day you will have: * discovered the causes and effects of stress * considered the sources of stress in your service * the ability to recognise the symptoms of stress in yourself and others * looked at some stress reduction strategies * identified how to reduce stress at work to levels which are stimulating rather than exhausting. The style of the workshop is highly participative and two weeks before the event pre-course material will be distributed to everyone attending.
