Invitation to an International Collaboration Project on Urban Conservation and Sustainable Development of the Urban Cultural Heritage from the Late 19th Century - A European Network"

Among Swedish cities Sundsvall has the best preserved city centre from the late 19th century. This is an important part of our industrial and cultural heritage. The architecture - so called eclectic - is artful, impressive, genuine and unique. We would like to invite European partners to a dialogue about:
a.. International collaboration on the urban cultural heritage
b.. The preservation and sustainable development of the urban cultural heritage with special reference to the late 19th century
c.. Strategies to promote our cultural heritage as a resource for human development
d.. Culture tourism and urban conservation
We believe that partners may be found within cities in which the main part was erected during the years 1860-1920 and has a well preserved city centre or other areas within the city.

Overall objective
To establish a collaboration with European cities with a similar urban cultural heritage as Sundsvall
- for a mutual collaborative work on questions of importance for the preservation and sustainable development of the urban cultural heritage, and
- in order to promote culture tourism, finding new ways for this purpose through an international co-operation.

Aims
In establishing internationally useful guidelines for the preservation of the urban cultural heritage, with the background of a recognition of the cultural heritage as a resource for the future, we will find the code for best practice. This may provide a foundation and motivation for future practical co-operative projects.

Questions to be discussed during the project:
a.. How do we maintain our cultural heritage and in the same time find ways to promote it from a commercial point of view?
b.. How far can we go with the commercial development before the cultural heritage is severely damaged?
c.. Do manifests like the Venice charter still have an impact today or have they been replaced by other ways of expressing these views?
d.. How do we attain the "right" quality in the preservation and sustainable development of the cultural heritage? How do we define the "right" quality?
e.. How do we disseminate knowledge of and insight into the values represented by the cultural heritage in order to base the work on preservation as well as the skill and ability for handicraft on high quality standards?
f.. Which are the best ways to raise both the interest and competence among developers, property owners, building contractors and other groups of professionals for urban design and urban planning, as regards cultural values within the architecture and the preservation of these values in practice?
