Reverting for a moment to a previous thread on the use of titles such as
"Beatus" versus "Sanctus" etc. I've been reading some writings of the famous
Monte Cassino forger Peter the Deacon. In several documents he consistently
refers to St. Benedict as "sanctissimus", but to his disciple (and quondam
prior) Maurus as "beatissimus". Of course both were considered saints in the
order, so here these titles apparently are being used rather carefully to
denote a sort of monastic hierarchy of holy fathers.
