I just use the system generated numbers and happily type away regardless in the comfort that each number is unique - except that it isn't of course. An event can have the same number as a monument or a source etc. This is where I get confused, especially when it comes to numbering up planning reports. You have to write event BN1603, Report(source)BN2538, Monuments BN6903,BN6904 etc., in order to make sense of it. Obviously the system doesn't mind, and I would hate to start yet another local numbering sequence...does it really matter?

In coming to terms with the event-source-monument model in Essex we are
trying to decide how best to reference events and whether this should be by
a unique numbering system or whether a system-generated number, as is done
in the Exegesis system, is sufficient. We would be very interested to hear
