Safety in Social Research

by Gary Craig, Anne Corden and Patricia Thornton

Abstract

* There is growing awareness of the risks involved in social
research - for researchers; for their employers, and for those people
who agree to take part.
* There is a need for wider discussion of safety aspects for social
researchers, and increasing interest in development of a Code of
Practice for Safety.
* Safety at work is the responsibility of both employers and
employees. In the context of social research it may be hard to
clarify how responsibilities should be shared, and hard to make sure
that both parties meet those responsibilities. Safety should be
addressed by research funders as well as employers and research
managers.
* Some issues about personal safety encompass ethical considerations.

Social Research Update is published quarterly as part of the
commitment of the Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey
to support social research training and development. Further details
of postgraduate courses, day-courses and research in the Department
can be found at its web-site, <http://www.soc.surrey.ac.uk>
