VIRTUAL URBAN LABORATORY

After obtaining a large capital grant from HEFCE to set up a virtual urban model, applications are invited for four PhD studentships in the following areas. In addition to these studentships there will also be an opportunity for fee waivers in a range of subject areas related to the project.

Virtual Environments (two studentships)

As a researcher you will join a leading team, including a newly-appointed Research Fellow, in virtual environments; integration and management of data and information in construction; and regeneration strategies. You will work with local authorities, developers and community groups to undertake advanced research in intelligent virtual models and augmented reality interfaces, with researchers in the University's 5* Research Centre in Built and Human Environment.


You will have access to world-class virtual reality facilities such as a CAVE, Immersive Workbench and Reality Centre and augmented reality devices to conduct this research.


The candidates should have a good BSc degree in Computer Science or related field. A good knowledge of graphics and C++ is essential.

Sociology of Technology and Decision Making

You will be registered under the supervision of Professor Tim May (Institute of Social Research) and Professor Simon Marvin (Centre for Sustainable Urban and Regional Futures - SURF). Candidates will possess, or expect to obtain in the near future, a Master's degree in the areas of the sociology of technology, organisations or social research (although other suitably qualified candidates can apply). You should also be able to demonstrate an ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, have commitments to urban regeneration and some prior research experience. Augmented and Mixed Realities

You will join a team from the Centre for Virtual Environments, the Centre for Robotics and Automation and the Centre for Networking and Telecommunications Research to work on aspects of:

  a.. robotics
  b.. haptics
  c.. wireless networking
  d.. virtual reality
  e.. networked multimedia applications
you should have a good degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a numeric subject are sought with an interest in any of the above subject areas.
