Two PhD studentships in "Extending XML's Linking"
                             funded by EPSRC
School of Computer Science & IT
                        University of Nottingham, UK

Applications are invited for two PhD studentships in the School of
Computer Science & IT at the University of Nottingham for research in the
area of "Extending XML's Linking". The studentships are funded by the
EPSRC and will provide tuition fees for UK students (approximately 2,740
pounds pa) and living expenses linked to the national EPSRC rate
(approximately 7,050 pounds pa) for a period of three years.
Discretionary funds will also be available to cover the costs of attending
conferences etc.

The start date is October 2000, or as soon as possible thereafter, and the
deadline for applications is the 31st of August 2000.

RESEARCH TOPICS

This project is concerned with ways to improve the hypertext functionality
in distributed information systems, in particular the World Wide Web. This
will involve a number of approaches, including extending the linking parts
of the new XML document interchange standard. In particular, the
computation of links, importing of link computations and the use of
autonomous applications to compute links are features to be explored as
part of this project.

The first studentship is for research in the area of "XML's linking and
links in XML applications". There are two approaches to be explored, the
first being to investigate how to extend XML's inbuilt linking
recommendations, the second being to investigate building link
functionality into specific XML applications.

The second studentship is for research in the area of "Autonomous linking
engine". In this approach, linking functionality is achieved by bypassing
the inherent XML application mechanisms that browsers generally support,
using a plug-in approach to make the browser more powerful. It will use
the open hypertext systems principle of providing link services separately
to the data, but in this case will implement and evaluate a more general
and powerful hypertext linking model.
