The theme of 'Making and Unmaking' has given this years Design History
Society Conference the opportunity to provide a forum for creative and
critical practitioners,cultural historians, social scientists and policy
makers to engage with the interactions between creative practice and
criticism.

Hosted by the University of Portsmouth,Thursday 7 to Saturday 9
September,the conference venue is Colin Stansfield-Smith's acclaimed
Portland Building which is convenient to the City Centre and transport
links.The Conference Dinner will take place on the Gun Deck of HMS Warrior
1860,a major attraction in the Historic Dockyard, and the Conference
reception,held in the City Museum,will feature the presentation of the DHS
Essay Prize award.

The academic programme is supported by a number of related exhibitions and
installations that include contemporary maker's responses to the Brampton
tradition in salt glazed ceramics,European jewellers engagement with value
and experience,'First Things First' and the re-making of graphic design,The
Museum of Modern Craft project, Gregory Eco-Design competition: the
portable office, uses of interactive multi media, and reception of
ecological innovation in architecture.

Fully funded places for students whose institutions are affiliated to the
Design History Society are available.Information about this sceme was

Publicity for the conference has appeared in Blueprint, Artists Newsletter,
