PLEASE EXCUSE THE FACT THAT YOU MAY SEE THIS MORE THAN ONCE Call for Papers - AAG 2001 ***************************************************************** Taking off the Kid Gloves: Young People's Geographies On Impact ***************************************************************** Organizers, Thomas Herman and Stuart Aitken Sponsors, Socialist Geography and Geographic Perspectives on Women Specialty Groups (as well as the nascent Young People's Geographies Specialty Group) With young people's geographies garnering more and more interest from academics and policymakers, this session aims to underscore the importance of recognizing young people's contributions to, and impact upon, the communities in which they live. In addition to unweaving theoretical entrapments of the youth/adult dichotomy, we want to cultivate an appreciation for young people's individual and collective efficacy and so that we can interrupt discourses that define youth primarily through the allowances and protestations of adult societies. Therefore, we welcome participation by anyone working in the area of children's and young people's geographies who wishes to articulate a connection between young people's geographies and their motivations, desires, aspirations, and senses of responsibility. We hope that the combined effect of the papers will be to represent young people and the diverse places they inhabit in their own light, and to begin to broaden the discussion about young people to include roles not anticipated or emphasized by prevailing discourses of youth and socialization. Interested parties should contact either Thomas Herman ([log in to unmask]) or Stuart Aitken ([log in to unmask]) no later than July 24. *************************************** Thomas Herman Department of Geography San Diego State University San Diego, CA 92182-4493 Office phone: 619/594-2776 Fax: 619/594-4938 Email: [log in to unmask] **************************************** %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
