Members of the Critical Geography Forum: Apologies for X-Posting Massey University in New Zealand is proposing to close its Women's Studies Programme as part of a larger restructuring of the university that, at present, will see about 100 academic faculty and general staff made redundant. In addition, more than 200 university staff are to be made to re-apply for their own jobs -- although just how this process is to work has yet to be revealed. This restructuring, and its attendant redundancies, is ostensibly being carried out in the name of 'improving efficiencies'. However, efficiency gains seem to be especially targetted towards the College of Science and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as departments and units that have a critical edge to them, such as Women's Studies. While the senior administrators at the University may have made up their minds, it may not be too late to save Women's Studies from closure. It would thus be very helpful if listmembers were to write a letter to the Vice-Chancellor of Massey University to voice your concerns over the impending closure of the programme. Messages of opposition to the closure of Women's Studies should be sent to: Professor James McWha Vice-Chancellor Massey University Private Bag 11-222 Palmerston North New Zealand E-mail: [log in to unmask] In addition, copies of all correspondence should be sent to: Dr. Lynne Alice Women's Studies Programme School of Sociology and Women's Studies Massey University Private Bag 11-222 Palmerston North New Zealand E-mail: [log in to unmask] Those of you who wish to obtain further information about the proposed closure may contact either Lynne Alice ([log in to unmask]) or Lynne Star ([log in to unmask] ) directly at Massey University. Thanks in advance to all of those who take time to assist in preventing the closure of Women's Studies at Massey University. Sincerely, Lawrence Berg Lawrence D.
