Not having seen my response posted on Lis-pub-libs, I wonder if I sent it to
the wrong email address? Am trying again in case!

Subject:	RE: Staff badges

Yes, we do in Devon Library and Information Services.

Basically, all staff are required to wear badges (though non
front-line ones tend only to wear them when attending meetings etc). So long
as they are individually identifiable, we are not prescriptive as to what
the badge says. It can be the full actual name, or just a first name, or a
pseudonym, or job title and number or initials (eg Library Assistant 34 or
Library Assistant A.B.), or just job title if unique within that library- we
keep records of who each one is!

There was considerable concern when we first agreed to introduce
badges, especially in the urban libraries, about names being made publicly
available to all and sundry (issues such as potential burglaries from
obviously unoccupied homes, stalkers, perverts etc). Some staff had
particular reasons for concern - eg one with an unusual surname whose
husband was a prosecuting solicitor, or another with a husband in Trading
Standards. Allowing choice did much to allay these fears, and still meets
the objective of identifying individuals when necessary. What tended to
happen was that more senior staff and those in smaller rural libraries went
for their full names, children's staff chose a forename, assistants in town
libraries preferred initials or numbers and so on - all very predictable.

It's also worth going for a badge that allows options in terms of
how you attach it - ours allow clip, pin, or chain. This defeats the
objections of the "I'm not pinning anything onto my blouse/shirt" brigade,
and allows different solutions for different kinds of clothing. Ours were
produced by Recognition Express, an Exeter based firm (we can supply contact
details if you wish), and the only problem was that the surfaces scratched
very easily - something I feel they should be able to overcome if they want
the orders!

We're now in limbo on badge replacement awaiting a corporate
decision post local government reorganisation, but we hope to be allowed to
stick with our current guidelines.

	Subject:	Staff badges

	Dear All,
My final request! Does anyone have any policies and procedures on
staff wearing badges to identify themselves, e.g. do you insist all
staff wear badges, do you put full names, first names or 'staff'.
Any
replies to: Richard Marshall e-mail: librm:rbkc.gov.uk
With regard to all the questions I have asked I will collate and
post back
to the list any replies that are received.
