Research placement in "Information Ecosystems" R&D at BT Labs
 =============================================================

The Future Technologies Research Group, part of the Advanced
Communications Research (ACR) department at BT Laboratories, is
carrying out leading research and development into nature-inspired
computing, new approaches to computational architectures & algorithms,
evolutionary computing, and information ecosystem simulations.

 For more details see: http://www.labs.bt.com/projects/ftg

We are keen to hear from candidates who may be interested in joining
one of the company's cutting edge research groups. A placement is
available for one year (July 2000 - June 2001), in the first instance.

The role will involve extensive contact and collaboration with
research institutions throughout Europe and close liaison with other
operational divisions within BT. This position is ideal for an
enterprising researcher, or indeed for an academic who wants to
 realise his/her ideas in industry.

BT Labs at Adastral Park, Martlesham Heath in the east of England, is
acknowledged as one of the world's leading telecommunications R&D
centres in terms of both size and excellence.

PLACEMENT DESCRIPTION:

Play a major part in the research, design and development of
nature-inspired and novel computing techniques for simulating and
 engineering "information ecosystems": ecosystem-inspired models
of information interchange. Identify new applications of
these ideas and develop proof-of-concept demonstrators.

Candidates with a good grounding of agent-based systems, A-Life and
evolutionary computing techniques are especially welcomed to apply.

 SKILLS REQUIRED:

PhD, MSc. or equivalent research experience in an area related to
(fine-grained) agent-based systems, ecosystems of interacting
components, swarm intelligence or nature-inspired computing.
Candidates who want to draw from other areas in order to bring new
and radical thinking to engineering complex information ecosystems
 are also encouraged to apply.

Good innovative skills in researching, designing and engineering novel
architectures and algorithms. Strong object-oriented design and
programming skills, preferably in Java, would be a *significant*
 advantage.

High motivation and good interpersonal, teamworking, writing and
 communication skills are expected.
