So it's official!  From today's Guardian -

A good nose for memory

Smell is a better memory cue than words or pictures, the British
Psychological Conference in Winchester was told yesterday.
Simon Chu recounted how in China families registered an event by talking it
over while passing a pot of pungent herbs between them, and years later the
herbs would recall that day.
