As I understand it, the Kiplings' home in Lahore was called Bikaner House
because they had a theory that plants and shrubs round the house caused
disease (which, since dense greenery encouraged mosquitoes, would have been
true). The local British nicknamed it after the Bikaner Desert because,
as a result, their garden looked so bare.
