The World’s Largest Collection of Manuscripts on Microfilm

Stipend: Up to $1500 is awarded twice a year to selected scholars of any
nationality to assist them in spending generally at least two weeks in
Collegeville working with the HMML collections. Advanced graduate
students and recent Ph.D.s are eligible. Campus housing and meal plans
are available.

Facility: The Hill Monastic Manuscript Library holds over 90,000
microfilmed copies of manuscripts from around the world, including works
housed in archives and libraries in over 25 countries.* The Library also
contains many secondary resources and catalogs to assist in manuscript
study.

Location: Collegeville, Minnesota is located 75 miles northwest of
Minneapolis and 10 miles west of St. Cloud. Saint John's University is
situated on the grounds of Saint John's Abbey, the world's largest
Benedictine abbey. There are 2400 acres of prairie, woodlands and lakes
surrounding the campus.

Instructions: Applicants should submit a letter of application,
curriculum vitae, a brief description of their research project
including proposed length of stay, an explanation of how the Library's
resources will enable them to advance their project, and a confidential
letter of recommendation from their advisor, thesis director, mentor,
or, in the case of postdoctoral candidates, a colleague who is a good

*An incomplete list of countries and political units whose manuscript
collections are represented in HMML’s holding includes Austria (nearly
complete), Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, England, Ethiopia, France,
Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malta (nearly
complete), Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, USA, Vatican City, and Yugoslavia. Special Study Centers
for the German and Austrian, Ethiopian, and Malta collections are
maintained.
