There is a growing body of literature in this field.  I guess it  
depends what period youre interested in.  As regards Scotland  
David McCrone's 'Understanding Scotland' is a useful sociological  
approach.  A very interesting look at religious identity is Storrars'  
'Scottish Identity:  A Christian Vision (1990), which is, of course,  
important in looking at the protestant union.  Ethnic ties are  
explored by Colin Kidd's 'british Identities before nationalism' 
(1999).
