Geodynamics of the NW Himalaya

A.K. Jain and R.M. Manickavasagam (Editors)

© 1999 Gondwana Research Group, p. xii+377

The northern frontier of the Gondwanaland with Laurasia is demarcated by the youngest and loftiest mountain belt-the Himalaya. The Himalaya orogenic belt manifests numerous young and ongoing crustal processes involving large scale deformation, remobilization and metamorphism, crustal anatexis and granite emplacement, exhumation of partly subducted continental crust and deposition of orogenic-derived sediments in the foredeep. All these evolutionary processes have followed an earlier phase of subduction-accretion controlled signatures within the Himalaya as emplacement of ophiolites, development of island-arc volcanism and intrusion of calc-alkaline batholiths, with signatures of a well-defined junction between two giant plates-the Indian and Eurasian. "Geodynamics of the NW Himalaya" assembles 35 high quality papers from reputed workers, and presents a wealth of information on geological, structural, geochemical, isotopic, geophysical and tectonic aspects of an young orogenic belt, which provides important clues for a better understanding of the plate tectonic models on Archaean and Proterozoic terrains.
