Fourth International Conference

ENTERPRISE IN TRANSITION

- Competitiveness, restructuring and growth -

24th  26th May 2001.

First call for papers

The last decade has been marked by the process of transition of the former
socialist countries, which has involved a complex task of socio-economic
restructuring, aiming at re-establishing the interrupted flow of history,
as well as developing modern social, economic and political structures. The
most advanced among these countries have now passed the first stages of
transition, but there is still a long way ahead. Many countries are still
struggling with fundamental issues and problems and trying to find their
way toward economic and social progress.

The experience of living with the transition to democracy and market
economy has motivated the Faculty of Economics at the University of Split
to organise a global forum which would bring together both the scholars and
practitioners in search of solutions to the problems faced by enterprises
in transition economies.

In its previous work, the Conference Enterprise in Transition has
highlighted the need for scholarly consideration of many issues and
problems facing enterprises in transition economies. More than 300
published articles and 500 authors, coming from 40 different countries, as
well as many new links that have been forged among scholars interested in
these issues, assure that this Conference has initiated a fruitful
scientific collaboration, contributing to the further advancement of
economic science. In order to further this advancement, we believe it is
necessary to focus the authors' attention toward some pressing transitional
issues, which will prove to be very significant as we enter the third
millennium.

Therefore, the Fourth International Conference on Enterprise in Transition
will focus on the problems of ENTERPRISE COMPETITIVENESS, RESTRUCTURING AND
GROWTH.

In addition to the discussion of the transition from a socialist toward a
market economy, we would like to encourage and invite authors to consider
the issues relating to the growth and development of enterprises and
economies in transition. Such an orientation of the Conference encompasses
many different research themes, which reflects our comprehensive approach
to transitional problems, which have been key features of the Conference
from its very beginning.

Some of the issues we propose for discussion are:

COMPETITIVENESS:

- Determinants, indicators and measures of competitiveness;
- Technology, technical progress and competitiveness;
- Industrial policy and international competitiveness;
- Competitive strategies of contemporary enterprises;
- Management systems and enterprise competitiveness.

RESTRUCTURING:

- Company restructuring in the context of the process of globalisation;
- Privatization and restructuring of state-owned enterprises;
- Innovation, networks and entrepreneurship;
- Regional development and restructuring of local economies;
- Industrial restructuring and its effect on development.

GROWTH:

- Financing entrepreneurial growth and SME development;
- Direct foreign investment and its effects;
- Implications and effects of cooperation with the EU on growth in
  transition economies;
- Sustainable growth: a green paradigm for the countries in transition;
- Models and theories of growth for countries in transition.

This concept preserves the breadth of our approach to the problems of
transition, but at the same time, it directs the authors' efforts toward a
serious and relevant discussion of issues and dilemmas related to the
development of enterprises in transition economies. We especially encourage
the "case study" method, which has the potential to provide a deeper
insight into the real underlying processes of enterprises in transitional
economies. We believe that, together with more theoretically oriented
papers, these studies could significantly enhance the quality of the
Conference and its Proceedings.

Prospective authors are invited to submit a short abstract (up to 250
words) in English, including author’s name, affiliation and contact details
by 30. August 2000. The detailed instructions for authors will be provided
to all the authors whose abstracts are accepted for the Conference. Papers
(2 hard copies, printed on a high-quality printer, accompanied by the text
of the paper in a computer file, in Word for Windows format) should be
received by 31. December 2000, in order to be included in the review process.

Other important dates and deadlines are as follows:
