i am not quite clear from the queries if people are looking
for an
international overview or one about the USA or Britain
specifically?

1) i haven't seen anything comprehensive on the
international scale that
could be described as research, but some less formal
histories can be found
on Prof. Adolph Ratzka's website: www.independentliving.org
go to the library and scan the history and independent
living sections.

2) there are some fascinating international timelines
concerning disability
activism cropping up--take a look at www.ilru.org/summit for
one on
independent living
and at www.disabilityhistory.org for another rights-focused
one

3) concerning the usa, there are lots of people on this list
who are experts
on this topic, but a book i have found useful is Joseph
Shapiro's No Pity:
People with Disabilities Forging a New Civil Rights Movement
(1993, Random
House)

4) would also recommend Nora Groce's The U.S. Role in
International
Disability Activities:a history
It's close to out of print but some copies can still be
obtained from
Rehabilitation International. email: [log in to unmask]

i would love to hear what others recommend.
