Giraldus Cambrensis in his late 12th-century _History and Topography of
Ireland_ tells of a priest who meets 2 werwolves from Ossory, man and
woman, changed into this form by the curse of the abbot, St. Natalis. He
gives the viaticum to the woman werwolf, who is ill, and sends them on
their way. (The saint's curse demands that the pair wander for seven
years; if they survive, another pair then takes their place.) Giraldus
reports that the Bishop of Meath assembled a synod to seek advice about
what to do the story, confessed to him by the priest. Giraldus claims the
synod sent him to the pope with supporting documents.
