The Derbyshire SMR charges to cover the cost of conducting searches and providing the information, not for the information itself. Charges are only made where there is a commercial motive for the enquiry. All enquirers are told in advance if their enquiry will be charged. The rates of charge are set for the County Council by management, and not by the SMR itself. Non commercial enquiries are not subject to a charge regarding the costs of the search (i.e. search time), and will only be charged for the costs of providing the information ( paper, collation time, covering letter etc.,) if the quantity of paper involved is particularly large.
