LIBRARY ASSISTANT (Graduate Trainee)

The Institute is seeking to appoint a full-time Library Assistant under 
the Graduate Trainee Scheme for the period from August 2000 to 
August 2001. The appointment is ideally suited to candidates 
graduating in German in 2000 who wish to train for a career in 
librarianship. The position calls for a good knowledge of German and 
of German literature, initiative, energy and meticulousness. Details 
of the post and the method of application are set out below.

The Institute of Germanic Studies was founded in 1950 as a focus 
for postgraduate German Studies within the University of London. It 
is now part of the University's School of Advanced Study and is 
recognised as being a research resource of national importance. 
The reference library has over 89,000 volumes and specialises in  
primary literature of all periods, journals, reference works and 
language monographs. The Priebsch-Closs collection of rare books 
has over 3,000 volumes, the earliest dating from the late 15th 
century. There is an automated catalogue for book holdings, a 
microfiche catalogue for articles from 1965-1990. The Institute also 
has substantial manuscript and archive holdings, for which a partial 
database has been compiled.


Library Assistant

The post of Library Assistant is intended to give practical library 
experience to a recent graduate who means to go on to a 
postgraduate course in library or information science. Appointment 
to the post is for one year only; it is not renewable. The appointee 
will work within a very small library team and will be expected to 
take up the appointment on 1 August 2000.

The hours of work are from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., Monday to 
Friday.

The principal duties of the Library Assistant include:

	Accessioning: the sorting and recording of incoming books and 
journals, and dealing with the accompanying invoices;
	Statistics: compiling financial statistics, analysing library 
expenditure on a monthly and a cumulative basis;
	Bibliographies: compilation, using a variety of reference works, 
of bibliographies, usually of visiting speakers;
	Inter-Library Loans: tracing, photocopying, invoicing, 
forwarding, as appropriate, requests from other libraries for books or 
articles;
	Shelving; Book-labelling; Typing; Word-processing.

During the year the Library Assistant will also gain some experience 
of more professional duties (cataloguing, classification, reference 
queries) as time permits, and there will be opportunities to visit 
other libraries in London. He/she will also work on the bibliography 
of 18th-century drama.

The salary corresponds to Point 6 on the scale for Clerical and 
Administrative Staff of the University, Grade 1.  At present this is 
£11,644 per annum, inclusive of London Weighting. The salary is 
payable monthly in arrears. The holiday entitlement is 25 days 
exclusive of public and university holidays.
