Wojtek,
You could try the following:

Davis 1985 'Statistics and Data Analysis in Geology' 2nd Ed. Wiley & Sons
(this ref is from memory so somebody please correct if it's wrong).

This provides a good step by step introduction to eigenvectors and
eigenvalues. Unfortunately you can't escape the maths (which are mainly
matrix manipulations) if you want to understand the technique.

For more practical applications of the method then check out the following
refs:
Woodcock, N. H. 1977. Specification of fabric shapes using the eigenvalue
method. Geological Society of America Bulletin. V. 88, p1231-1236.

Woodcock, N. H. and Naylor M.A. 1983. Randomness testing in
three-dimensional orientation data. Journal of Structural Geology V.5, No.5,
p539-548. (tpc x2)

If you want to know about eigenvectors/values for fabric shape analysis then
there are also a number of stereonet plotting packages that include
eigenvector and eigenvalue calculations (e.g StereoPro
http://freespace.virgin.net/martin.walters/index.html amongst others).

Cheers

Tim
