Subject: Re: simulation exercises
Priority: normal

Hi everyone

I wonder has anyone simulated the experiences of people with
intellectual/developmental disabilities? I was wondering how one might do
this. Perhaps you could do what the woman did (darn...can't remember
her name...she did the 'blue eyes' experiment with kids to show what
racial oppression was like). You could, for an entire week, take control of
every action and thought, squash any self-determination and decision
making, put them on a behaviour modification program, take away all
sexual, financial and other basic human rights, make mundane all
activities, and take them for walks in small groups round and round a
shopping centre (mall). Am I becoming a cynic?

I was also thinking that if students are to know what its like to have a
physical disability and maybe an aquired brain injury, pop them in a chair
and push them down the stairs or in front of a moving car. Sorry folks,
thats awful - but I was just thinking how tempting that is, with some
students :-)
