Research Associate in the Centre for Rural Economy: Sustainable Agriculture
in Central and Eastern Europe

The Centre for Rural Economy (CRE) is a social science research centre in
the Department of Agricultural Economics and Food Marketing at the
University of Newcastle (grade 5 in the last Research Assessment Exercise).
Broadly, it is interested in research that supports the development of a
sustainable rural economy - its main research areas are agri-environment
issues and rural development.

CRE is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to work on an EU-funded
project 'Sustainable Agriculture in Central and Eastern Europe'. The
research, co-ordinated by the Humboldt University of Berlin, is part of an
international project involving four European Universities, FAO and
individual researchers in twelve countries in Central and Eastern Europe
(CEE). The project will address three main themes, including (i)
institutions of sustainability, governance structures and property rights;
(ii) agri-environmental policies and their implementation; and (iii)
sustainable farming systems. The University of Newcastle will be primarily
responsible for leading on the second of these themes. The appointee will,
therefore, work within a team of researchers focusing upon policies and
institutions for sustainable agriculture, in particular agri-environmental
policy.

The post will be based at the University of Newcastle and will involve
considerable travel, fieldwork and collaboration with researchers across CEE.

The Candidate

Necessary requirements:

· A social scientist with a background in economics, geography, area
studies or other relevant social science discipline

· Research experience in or a thorough knowledge of CEE transformation
issues, with an interest in agri-environment policy

· Interest/willingness to travel and to work throughout CEE in an
international collaborative project

· Experience of undertaking research and analysing the results

· Post-graduate qualification

· Ability to work in a team and without constant supervision

· Good writing, communication and presentation skills

 Desirable requirements:

· Experience in studying questions concerning agriculture, rural
development, sustainable development, environment policy or economies in
transition, or any combination of these

· A doctorate or equivalent research experience

Terms and conditions

Salary will be at an appropriate point within the range £16286-24479 per
annum on the Grade RA1A scale, according to qualifications and experience.
It is intended that the three year appointment will begin March 2000, or as
soon as possible thereafter.
