Not a terribly academic point I know, but here's an interesting one. Obviously, one of the SHOs has to do a night shift before going off to her new
job. I have always maintained that it is the place of the succeeding job to work around the previous one - so, if someone has a long trip to us I
accept that they may well turn up late for the induction day and help them afterwards.

This lass is going on to anaesthetics, and they have told her to be on the ITU ward round at 8am, no arguments. Clearly, if she has to be covering us
until that 8am this is impossible. I'm not going to be able to persuade someone else to do her shift and don't see why I should pay for a locum. I have
asked the Consultants at the other end to call me to negotiate, but I haven't heard yet. Any ideas?

Best wishes,

Rowley Cottingham
