Dear Ingrid,
see also last Saturday's Guardian for an article about the 
real-life prototype for Truffaut's "Jules et Jim" who was 
fascinated by red-haired English women as his hero, the 
poet Laforgue, had just such a girlfriend apparently. 
I've a feeling the "witch" in Eveline Hasler's novel (whose 
title escapes me.. Anna ??) is redhaired.  Sorry to be so 
vague, I can chase these up if you haven't got them 
already.  The heroine in Gotthelf's Schwarze Spinne may be 
similarly endowed, it's a long time since I taught (or 
read!) it...
