RESEARCH ASSOCIATE - RAILWAY NOISE

Minimum one year contract starting Summer 2000 - salary c.£16k

Based within Loughborough University's Transport Studies Group in the
Department of Civil & Building Engineering.

Railtrack plc is the client.

The responsibilities will include:

Collection and collation of data on noise measurement, mapping and
mediation work already undertaken within the UK rail industry.

Validation and population of mapping software to produce maps for
representative sections of the UK rail network to provide base data on
current noise levels and an estimate of the cost of a full scale mapping
exercise.

Estimation of possible actions required and costs to be incurred to meet
different potential maximum noise thresholds (including the 'worst case' of
certain activities being time and volume restricted).

Development of a methodology for proactive identification of potential
noise nuisance and suitable mitigation on the existing network.

Investigation of suitable methodologies to fund mapping and mitigation.

Undertake reviews of documents coming from European Union and elsewhere to
help Railtrack respond rapidly when consulted by government.

We are looking for a person with:
· at least a 2i honours degree;
· some knowledge of noise mapping and noise issues and/or knowledge of the
rail industry;
· ability to seek out data and turn it into information (evidence of this
may come from a recently completed project/dissertation); and
· ability to work with people, persuasive and determined (Railtrack is a
big, complex organisation, full of busy people who you will need to pin
down to get the data needed).

Robert Watson - Lecturer in Rail Transport - will be managing this research
contract and questions/expressions of interest should be addressed to him
