It is not only sex-workers who are abroad at night. A friend of mine was bashed recently by two over-zealous (and bigoted) security guards as she crossed the campus of her university late at night. She is a doctoral student and works all hours on her research. She had her shoulder dislocated, was vilified by the guards for her androgyny (referred to as "it") spent some time in police custody and had to go to court where the case was thrown out. She is taking a civil action against the security guards but I am sure she would rather the whole event had not taken place. For one thing, if she had been convicted she would not have been allowed to continue her degree which would have meant some years work down the drain.
