ONLINE SHORT-COURSE FOR STAFF DEVELOPERS INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING
DEVELOPMENT OF NETWORKED LEARNING IN HE INSTITUTIONS

BACKGROUND
-----------------------
The CBCGW Project is concerned with support for and research into networked
group learning in a Higher Education context. As part of our provision and
in recognition of needs identified elsewhere in our research we are
offering a chance for staff developers to experience first-hand one model of
online collaborative learning. It is hoped that this will also provide a forum
for staff developers involved in support provision for networked learning to share and discuss concerns about practice in different institutions.

AIMS

--------
To raise awareness of network learning and networked group learning
strategies.
To provide experience of online group work strategies.
To explore opportunities for changing staff development practice.

DATES

-----------
This 8 week online course begins 27th March and runs until 19th May 2000.

COST

--------
Participation in this course will cost £50 per person.
Places are limited to a total of 18 people and to 1 place per institution.

DETAILS OF THE COURSE
----------------------------------------
This course is entirely online. There are no face-to-face meetings and
participants can therefore mostly work in their own time and entirely from
their own place.

The online workshop has 4 phases looking at:
1. Acclimatisation & Introductions
-familiarising yourself with real-time and asynchronous tools in readiness for the work ahead.
2. Networked Learning Discussion Strategies
-exploring case studies of existing practice together.
3. Networked Materials
-adopting a collaborative online problem solving approach to materials design
4. Collaborative Evaluation
-sharing views of the current experience and assessing implications for developing practice

Participants might expect to budget for about 6 hours work per week on
average. All the work is centred upon discussions amongst participants and
there is an expectation that people will take an active role in contributing
to online discussions.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
-----------------------------------
Through participation in the course you will:

a.. Raise your awareness of current practices and issues elsewhere and be able to compare and contrast your own institutional context with other places.
b.. This will be achieved through online discussion with staff developers from elsewhere.
c.. Develop your understanding of networked learning through direct experience of one course model, several discussion strategies and various case studies.
d.. Raise your awareness of the possible relationship between online discussions and an online resource base.
e.. Develop your understanding of pedagogical issues in networked learning through experiential strategies.
Develop your knowledge and skills with different technologies. You will have the opportunity to try out real-time chat sessions in webct as well as asynchronous discussion tools.

TOOLS USED ON THE COURSE
-------------------------------------------------
The course will use WebCT and is entirely within a web-based environment.
You will need to be comfortable using a web browser and no specific
technical skills beyond that are assumed or required. Chat technology as
well as asynchronous tools will be used as part of the course
experience. Training will be provided on all tools used in the course.
