Wellcome Trust-ABSW bursaries 2000-2001
BURSARIES OF £10,000 AVAILABLE FOR SCIENCE COMMUNICATION STUDIES
Applications are invited for the Wellcome Trust-ABSW bursaries. These
competitive bursaries are intended to assist science graduates to undertake
postgraduate training in journalism or science communication. Applicants
should be British or Irish nationals undertaking an approved course within
the British Isles.
Eight bursaries each worth £10,000 are funded by a grant from the Wellcome
Trust and administered by the Association of British Science Writers. They
are available to assist towards course fees and subsistence during the
academic year 2000-2001.
Approved courses are fulltime postgraduate courses of 9-12 months' duration.
Journalism courses should have full or provisional NCTJ accreditation;
applicants should hold or be expecting to receive a degree in a science
subject, or will be taking a specific science journalism option within the
course. Science communication courses should lead to an MSc or equivalent
qualification. The acceptability of a course is at the discretion of the
ABSW.
The ABSW defines 'science' in the broadest sense, encompassing physical and
biological sciences, engineering and technology and medical sciences. It
defines journalism to cover both print, online and broadcast media.
Applicants should send a CV (maximum length 2 pages) a one page covering
letter, a 250 word statement bid for a bursary and three relevant clippings
to the Administrator, Association of British Science Writers, 23 Savile Row,
London W1X 2NB. The closing date for applications is Wednesday, June 7th,
2000. The ABSW will then invite candidates to submit a writing test. A
panel of judges drawn from the ABSW and the Wellcome Trust will choose the
winners in early summer 2000. Winners are expected to take up the bursary
and begin the course in the 2000-2001 academic year.
