I agree entirely about venue. Sorry if there's anyone out there from the BA who's heard me say this before, but I'm sure that one of the reasons why the real lay public doesn't show that much interest in attending their meeting is because it's always held in a place which that many people find intimidating - a university. But yourselves in the shoes of somone who hasn't been to university, and has never been in a lecture theatre, for example. You might well be worried about not being able to find your way around the campus, how to behave and where to sit when you eventually find your destination, and even whether or not you're really allowed inside some of these places at all. That goes for conference centres during conferences too, though perhaps they are slightly less awe-inspiring. But you still can be made to feel like a complete outsider.
