Peter Howard: "But I think I might be more likely to go to the trouble of mentioning the dodgy line-break if I thought the poet would be interested and perhaps re-consider it." couldn't you say that a poet in putting her or his work up on Poetryetc., that is, to a group of people who, presumably, have some interest in poetry above the merely precipitate, implies at the least an 'interest', in the poet, for comment? It's hardly going to be the case, anyhow, that every poem that someone mails will receive comment, let alone 'criticism' - and, arguably, a modicum of grunt is below this esteemed peer group (?) - to that extent it would only be those poems, for whatever reason - controversy, form, influences, subject, metrical probs. - which impel people to respond, that will be responded to ( unless there's a few hardly souls which, out of quixotic politeness, offer comments on everything that anyone submits.) So, I'd say that if anyone does take the trouble to respond then the poet submitting, at least, could recognise that there may be a reason above the gratuitous and welcome it as such... Does anyone know when the New and Selected by the great undiscussed Kevin Hart is to be published? ( I may have missed older posts on the subject.....)
