Asterix was never really my cup of tea. I credit Tintin with teaching me writing etiquette, what with his puritanical and essentially androgynous dialogue. Furthermore, Herge's constant historical references were fascinating and downright educational. I remember reading a novel based on the Tintin characters (by Frederic Tuten) which placed Tintin in a more rebellious context; he had an affair with a Peruvian woman and Captain Haddock became a washed-up old man.
