Was this Joan of Whatsit La (la!!!) Pucelle who was proposed by Giles de
Retz (Bluebeard)?  And isn't it 'pataphysical [sic]?  Going to look up my
Doctor Faustrol if'n I can find it.

I had a nice edition of +Surmale+ from the tall-and-narrow Cape editions
way
time ago in Glasgow in the sixties, but it went walkabout.
